“Oils have the purpose of transmitting heat to achieve cooking of food, enhancing textural attributes of a dish, and most importantly, as a median to absorb and transmit the "volatile oils" from spices, herbs, and aromatics into your dish,” explains restaurateur, food scientist, and three-time James Beard recipient Jimmy Schmidt. He tells us that each individual oil has a “unique flavor and component profile to take into consideration” when deciding which oil is best for which purpose.

To select the right oil, Schmidt recommends choosing “an oil that has the flavor profile that is complementary to your other ingredients. For example, select a green olive oil for dishes with green flavor ingredients such as basil, rapini, asparagus…while a golden olive oil will pair better with tan flavors of wild mushrooms. Grapeseed oil, which is very neutral, is great with either very delicate foods or very strong spices, both where their particular flavor profiles are best uninfluenced by the oil.”

One of Schmidt’s favorite oils to use is red palm fruit oil “due to high temperature stability as well as a bright red/orange color from its beta carotene content. The flavor profile is amazing with smoked paprika, chiles, and even garlic.”

From sautéing to frying, Schmidt tells us that the above mentioned oils “can handle the heat.” Infused oils can be a magical addition to any dish with overlapping and complex flavors that, when drizzled over a dish, tie all the ingredients together.

“Heat the selected complimentary oil to around 140 degrees Fahrenheit,” Schmidt instructs us. “Add the spices cooking slightly to release the volatiles spice oils into the cooking oil. Use [infused oils] in low temperature cooking, dressings, emulsions, garnish drizzles, and such for all the flavor of the oil and the spices.”

Schmidt is currently the executive chef creating contemporary American cuisine at Morgan’s in the desert, the signature restaurant at the legendary La Quinta Resort & Club. Schmidt has authored and co-authored several cookbooks including Cooking for All Seasons, Jimmy Schmidt’s Cooking Class, and Heart Healthy Cooking for All Seasons.


Essential Oil Recipes for Aromatherapy Candles

I love lighting candles throughout the house, especially when the sun goes down. Now I ’m finding I can add healthy benefits for body, mind, and soul every time I light a candle by making my own using essential oils. I enjoy my diffuser and diffuser jewelry throughout the day, but in the evening, I love my candles. It creates such a peaceful vibe.

If you’ve been using aromatherapy, you already know how wonderful each essential oil is with its own unique properties. Candles give you another way to enjoy the many benefits, as well as the fragrance and the peaceful atmosphere they produce.

Scented candles are great for meditation, helping you to keep your focus, especially when you make candles with essential oils such as lemon, lemongrass, bergamot, grapefruit or orange, which help get rid of distractions. Another one that’s nice for meditation because of its grounding properties is a frankincense candle.

One of my favorite morning candles to uplift my mood and get things off to a positive start is orange. It’s both refreshing and invigorating.

In my bedroom, I light up a lavender candle before bedtime to help me sleep.

Like using essential oils in a diffuser or topically, candles with certain oils are anti-bacterial, antioxidant, antimicrobial and antiviral, helping you with many physical issues.

You can use any of your favorite essential oils to make candles. It’s easy a nd doesn’t cost a lot.

Tips On Wax

Use soy wax, which can be melted in a microwave or double boiler, or beeswax, which you’ll need to melt in a double-boiler.

Skip the paraffin wax—it’s a byproduct of petroleum and releases carcinogenic soot when burned. The toxic chemicals benzene and toluene are released when this wax is heated, the same as those found in diesel fumes. This can cause respiratory problems or aggravate existing conditions such as asthma, lung, or heart problems. One reason to make your own candles is to have a healthier environment, so stay away from paraffin wax.

Supplies you’ll need to make your candles:

  • Using a double boiler, melt the wax.
  • Attach the wick in the center of the container. You can use superglue or dip the metal tab of the wick into the melted wax.
  • Once completely melted, add essential oils to the wax. The wax may have specific instructions on how much to use. If not, try 100 drops of essential oil for each pound of wax. This is something you may want to experiment with to get it just the way you like.
  • Let the mixture cool for a couple of minutes before pouring it into the container. Lightly hold the wick as you do so.
  • While it cools, secure the wick by placing a pencil or chopstick on top o f the jar and lightly wrapping the top of the wick around it.
  • Once cooled, trim the wick and enjoy!

Essential oils to add to candle recipes:

Use whatever essential oils you like, but here are a few ideas for your aromatherapy candles.

  • Destress and sleep tight with a combination of three drops each of lavender and ylang ylang and one drop of rose essential oil.

  • Nasal congestion, flu, headache? Mix five drops each of peppermint and star anise, along with two drops of clary sage.
  • For holiday candles (great gift idea), use juniper berry essential oil for an evergreen-scented candle.

With a bit of know-how and a little creativity, anyone can become a fragrance mixologist! Read on for tips to get you started, and snag some of our tried-and-true fragrance oil blend recipes to begin your blending adventure.

When it comes to blending fragrances, there is no right or wrong.

As you begin working with scents regularly, you’ll find that your nose for fragrance gets more and more refined. Just like with food and wine, as you’re working with and paying attention to the subtleties of different aromas, the more you’ll find your sense of smell evolving. Blending is a great way to “exercise” your nose and allows you to tweak fragrances to your own tastes and create your own candle scents. Not to mention. it’s just plain fun!

That said, it can seem a little intimidating to get started. But never fear, anyone can become a fragrance mixologist—all it takes is a bit of know-how and a little creativity.

The language of fragrance

When we describe the character of a fragrance, we talk about it in terms of top notes, middle notes, and base notes. The way the fragrance notes combine is what gives every scent its own unique profile.

    The top notes of a fragrance are what you smell first, the aromas that give you an initial impression and draw you in. Top notes are usually lighter in smell and tend to be citrusy or soft florals. These are the most volatile notes, meaning that they tend to fade more quickly than the others.

Paying attention to the fragrance notes is a great way to identify good scent combinations you might want to try—and it also helps develop your nose!

Blending basics

When you’re thinking about fragrance blends you want to try, we recommend starting with fragrances with which you already have some familiarity. Having that knowledge of how a standalone scent performs regarding the cold and hot throws will help you perfect your desired blend more easily.

The best way to begin your blending adventure is by jumping right in! Using blotter strips is a quick and easy way to test out different fragrance combinations and start training your nose to pick out the notes. Here’s how to use them:

  1. Dip the blotter into the fragrance bottle, using the red lines at the tip to guide you. If you want one fragrance to have a stronger presence, dip that one to the second line. If you want a 50/50 blend, dip both to the first line.
  2. Allow the blotter strips to dry for about 10 seconds.
  3. Hold the blotters together and fan them under your nose a few times until you get a good impression of the blend.

PRO TIP: Take detailed notes as you're testing out your fragrance oil blend ideas. Make note of the scents combos you've tried, the ratios, whether you tested it in a candle, etc.

You’re probably ready to test out a few of your blend ideas, but first.

What makes a fragrance a good blender?

That’s simple: simplicity! When you’re learning and getting your process down try to stick to more basic scents for the best results. If you do want to try a blend with a more complex fragrance, make sure to keep the other fragrance/s simple.

The benefits of blending

Fragrance blending is lots of fun, but it’s also a great way to differentiate your brand. Custom scents that can’t be found anywhere else entice customers to return again and again. Not to mention, you can create an entirely new fragrance library without the need to buy, test, and evaluate new fragrances!

Blending is also the perfect opportunity to flex those creative muscles! Scent blends can spark some attention-grabbing fragrance names, label designs, and other fun branding ideas. To get you started, here are a few candle scent name ideas we came up with for autumn and Halloween-themed fragrances.


Making the Fragrance

Add the base note oil to the measuring cup with the dropper.

Add the middle note oil to the measuring cup with a dropper.

Add the high note oil to the measuring cup. If making perfume oil, these essential oils should only make up 10 percent of your overall mixture.

Add the carrier oil to make up the rest of the equated amount. In perfume oil, the carrier oil will be 90 percent of the mixture.

Mix well with a clean spoon and pour into a dark colored-glass bottle with a tight seal to preserve the oils.

You only need a few dabs on your skin at a time, since the essential oils are so strong.


Essential Oil Blending Tools

Essential Oils:

You'll need a nice selection of staple oils, top, middle, and base scent notes, and maybe some special treats like organic rose or organic helichrysum. Blends don't need be overly complicated. Often, you'll find that a simple, well-proportioned mix of just two oils is enough to create a brand new type of plant magic. Keep in mind that you are working with potent, undiluted essential oils, so you'll want to avoid getting any on your hands.

Droppers, Pipettes, or Reducer Caps:

Most essential oil bottles come equipped with a reducer cap, but if there aren't any available, keep some glass droppers or pipettes handy for controlled blending.

Small Glass Storage or Blending Bottles:

Glass bottles in sizes 1/24 oz., 1/8 oz., or 1/4 oz. work well for small batch blending, as the glass won't react with these volatile oils.

Perfume Blotters or Cotton Balls:

Smell and observe how your creations transform as they evaporate different aroma notes will come to the fore in different stages as the blend diffuses into the air.

Pen and Paper:

Write down the amounts of each oil used. You don't want to spend all that time crafting your perfect new diffuser recipe, only to forget the proportion the next morning!

And of course, your nose !

Developing Your New Fragrance Blend

When creating blends, only work with a small amount of oil at a time. Once you've found a proportion you like, you can mix a larger batch later. Essential oils are precious, and you don't want to make a one-ounce batch right off the bat, dislike the result, and end up wasting all that herbal goodness!

I like to start by formulating with 10 drops. This amount is easy to work with and converts nicely for figuring percents:

10 drops = 10 parts = 100% of the test blend

Be sure to count accurately while blending. Keep a written list of each oil and the amount you add. You'll want this information later to make a larger batch. I suggest writing all of the oils down before you start. This way, you only have to tally the drops for each oil while working.

For example, here's a formula I developed that's now one of my go-to blends:

Notice how this makes for an easy blend totaling 10 drops or 10 parts or 100%.

Be mindful of the different notes of each aroma as you blend. You will want to include top note oils, middle note oils, and base note oils. Trust me, it's worth taking the time to learn about fragrance notes, as it will help you create a more well-rounded scent "story." Your goal is to create a blend that you enjoy throughout all its stages of evaporation.

Getting Started with Fragrance Blending

I like to begin with the base notes. Add one to three drops to your blending vessel. These initial drops can include only one oil or a combination. Keep in mind that these base notes are the longest-lasting notes of a blend. Some base notes do not have much aroma, but they can still play an important role in helping to sustain top note oils longer. Others are very tenacious and potent, requiring only one drop for scent and fixative purposes.

Next, move on to adding middle note oils. I would suggest two to four drops of a single oil or combination. These oils are going to make up the body of your blend and should combine with the base notes to build your scent.

Finally, add your top note oils. These aromas help create the first impression of your blend. If mixed well with middle and base note oils, the ultimate blend should last longer than any single oil itself, creating a scent that you can enjoy as it unfolds.

From there, put some of your test blend on a perfume blotter or cotton ball and inhale to see how the aromas evaporate. This would be the time to add new oils or to boost an ingredient that may not be as prominent as you like. Retest the blend the following day to see if you want to make any more adjustments. Getting creative and tweaking recipes is the fun part of experimenting with scents, so grab some of your favorite essential oils and get blending!


Gather the Right Materials

Creating your own perfume will require the following ingredients and materials:

  • 1 5 ml (0.2 fl oz) rollerball bottle
  • 3 essential oils: head, heart, and base
  • 4 pipettes or glass droppers: one for each essential oil and one for the carrier oil
  • Unscented carrier oil, like jojoba or almond oil

Fragrance 101

Perhaps the only part of fragrance blending that makes any scientific sense is the notion of fragrance notes.

Every fragrance eventually evaporates into the air. The time it takes for it to fully evaporate makes it either a:

  • Top note. Quick evaporation. High volatility.
  • Middle note. Characteristic, memorable scent of the blend.
  • Base note. Supports the top and middle notes and extends the longevity of the scent.

Fragrance is usually classified into one or two of these categories based on their volatility in the blend.

Like candles, fragrance operates as a system of notes. An ingredient or scent easily called a base note in one fragrance may be a middle note in another. Scents generally cooperate with other scents.

But, if you could extract a “single” note from a fragrance, you’d find they somewhat organize into certain families and note profiles. Here are a few examples of note generalizations. Many fluctuate between top/middle or middle/base depending on the source and the sister fragrances nearby.

Complex fragrances balance the contributions of each note layer as a compliment to your amygdala, which is subjective. Fragrance design comes down to balancing the top, middle, and base notes to accomplish a high performing, long lasting, pleasing aroma.


Fragrance Oils and Why They Make the Best Scented Candles

FRAGRANCE NOTES
Fragrance is like music: it has three sets of notes to create one harmonious accord, and each note may contain a symphony of scents. Fragrances are created by balancing the right combination of top, middle and base notes:

  • Top notes, also called head notes, are typically 15-25% of the fragrance these are what you smell first and they tend to evaporate quicker than the other notes.
  • Middle notes, also called heart notes, are typically 30-40% of the fragrance and make up the body of the fragrance they are what you smell after the top notes have faded.
  • Base notes give a fragrance its “staying power” and are typically 40-55% of the fragrance: without base notes, the fragrance would evaporate quickly and wouldn’t provide ample scent throw.
  • When sampling candles and other fragrant products, take 3 consecutive whiffs to allow your nose to completely work through all the fragrance notes. You may not initially smell some of the middle or base notes until the top notes evaporate.
  • Fragrances may blend together after a while, making it difficult to distinguish one from another or even really smell the next one. Avoid olfactory fatigue: sniff coffee beans, smell your arm, clothes or something else between fragrances to give your nose a break and cleanse your nasal palate.
  • Everybody smells things differently. Someone may not like your favorite fragrance, and vice versa, but that doesn’t make any fragrance bad or wrong it just means it’s not that person’s cup of tea, which is okay. And it’s okay that you like it too.

SCENTED CANDLES
Scent "throw” refers to the release of fragrance from a candle: the “cold throw” is the scent released when a candle is unlit at room temperature, the “hot throw” is the scent released when the candle is burning.

When making candles: the wax is melted to a specific temperature, the fragrance is added to the wax, the wax and fragrance are blended together, and the mixture is set to cool down to a specific “pour” temperature before pouring the candle.

Another factor in candle making that affects the scent is the temperature at which the fragrance oil is blended with the melted wax, which can differ from fragrance to fragrance. If you add the fragrance oil at too high a temperature, it’ll “burnoff” however, you want to make sure the wax temperature is hot enough for the fragrance oil to properly bond with the wax. If the temperature is too low, the fragrance will not bond properly.

Because soy wax is softer than paraffin wax, it bonds better with fragrance oils which means you’ll smell fragrance from the first burn to the last burn. The molecules of paraffin are so strong and difficult to break apart that the fragrance oil may not get distributed throughout the wax, which leads the scent to burn out on some paraffin candles. Not all fragrance oils are rated to work well with all types of wax, so it’s important to mix the right fragrance with the right wax. Lit Up Candle Co. only works with fragrances that are rated to throw a scent with soy wax.

There are two types of scent for candles: 1) fragrance oils and 2) essential oils.

FRAGRANCE OILS
Fragrance oils are formulated from many aromatic ingredients derived from nature and created by scientific methods. Natural ingredients include essential oils, resins and absolutes. Although synthetic ingredients are man-made, they are also found in nature and reproduced synthetically using scientific techniques.

Not all fragrance oils are created equal. Candle making suppliers offer a wide variety fragrance oils however, fragrance oils from suppliers are often forumlated for bath & body use. The IFRA (International Fragrance Association), RIFM (Research Institute for Fragrance Materials) and FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) regulate standards for safety, purity and the maximum amount of fragrance oil that’s safe to use in products like soaps and cosmetics, which is much less concentrated than what you can put in candles.

At Lit Up Candle Co., we work directly with our perfumer to formulate our signature fragrances that are 100% organic, phthalate free, paraben free, vegan, gluten free, cruelty free and IFRA compliant.

Each type of candle wax is rated to bond with a different percentage of fragrance oil: when you add too much fragrance oil to a candle, it’ll leech out of the wax. Most suppliers recommend using 1 oz. of fragrance per 1 lb. of soy wax (which is about 6%). We use almost double the recommended ratio and add 10% fragrance oil to our candles that combined with our fully-concentrated organic fragrance oils give our soy candles the absolute best scent throw possible.

ESSENTIAL OILS
The alternative to fragrance oil is essential oils. Essential oils are distilled down from the oil of the plant from which they were extracted. Although essential oils are natural and may provide therapeutic benefits, there are several drawbacks to using them in candles:

  1. Many essential oils lose their therapeutic benefits when they are burned in a candle.
  2. Essential oils are typically much more expensive than fragrance oils and prices can fluctuate based on weather, crops and the trade relationships between countries.
  3. While essential oils may provide a good cold throw, they provide very little scent when you burn them in a candle. It takes a lot more essential oil to try and achieve the strength of scent from a fragrance oil, which is also cost prohibitive.
  4. Essential oils do not offer the variety of scents that fragrance oils provide for example, you cannot get an Apple Ginger Crust or a Pumpkin Apple Butter essential oil.
  5. Essential oils can cause just as many allergic reactions as fragrance oils (perhaps even more) in fact, majority of the 26 known allergens on the EU list are from natural sources (16 are essential oil constituents and two are absolutes).
  6. Some essential oils can be toxic to pets, whether taken internally, applied to the skin or simply inhaled.

PHTHALATES
Phthalates are esters of Phthalic acid and can be used to dissolve raw materials when making fragrance oils. Products including phthalates have increasingly becoming a concern to consumers due to certain types being labeled as potentially having negative health effects. The particular type of phthalates creating this concern is typically used as ‘plasticizers,’ which allow plastic products to become flexible without compromising their strength. This type of phthalate is not the same as those that are used in creating fragrance oils. The phthalate commonly used in fragrance products is diethyl phthalate, or DEP it’s a solvent used to extend the aromatic strength of the candle fragrance oil.

Although DEP has been found by the IFRA to be non-toxic in skin products and candles, if used at safe levels, many suppliers have already or are working to remove all phthalates from their fragrance oils. And just to be on the safe side, all of our fragrance oils are phthalate-free.

In conclusion, there are a lot of myths about fragrance oils and essential oils. While essential oils are 100% natural, they are not sustainable or effective scents for candles. Fragrance oils are safe, provide a much wider variety of aromas, are much more cost-effective than essential oils and make the best scented candles.

Fall/Winter Combinations:

Light the Fire essential oil blend–this is a spicy, invigorating aroma. It contains Mastrante, Northern Lights Black Spruce from Young Living’s Ecuador and Canada farms, along with Nutmeg, Cassia, Ocotea, Canadian Fleabane, Lemon, Pepper, and Hinoki.

Thieves essential oil blend–this blend is often referred to as smelling “like Christmas.” It contains, Cinnamon Bark, Rosemary, Eucalyptus Radiata, Lemon, Clove.

Believe essential oil blend–mentally uplifting and energizing aroma may help promote belief in ourselves and our capabilities. Contains Idaho Balsam Fir, Coriander, Bergamot, Frankincense, Idaho Blue Spruce, Ylang Ylang, and Geranium.

Cinnamon Bark essential oil–historically, cinnamon is thought to attract wealth (sounds good to me). Try blending this with one of the following:

Idaho Balsam Fir essential oil–creates a feeling of grounding, anchoring, and empowerment. I love this one because I spent a week on Young Living’s Highland Flats farm and inhaling this aroma instantly brings me back to that amazing week. Try blending with one of the following:

Idaho Blue Spruce essential oil–may ground the body, creating the feeling of balance necessary to receive and to give. Try blending with one of the following:

So, which essential oils do I use and where do I get them?

I use Young Living. I could probably write a book about why at this point but this video pretty much sums it up. I’m in it too! This is the reason I’m in love with Idaho Balsam Fir essential oil.
